Malaysia set to host 2026 Petanque World Championships for the first time

World federation offers Malaysia the hosting rights, with plans to align the event with Visit Malaysia Year 2026

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia is poised to make history with a potential debut as host of the 2026 Petanque World Championships, a move that could elevate the nation’s profile in the global boules arena.

Malaysian Boules Sports Federation (MBSF) acting president Cheah Ban Cheng said the World Petanque and Bowls Federation (WPBF) has offered Malaysia the hosting rights, tentatively set for late September next year.

“It’s an incredible honour as Malaysia has never hosted a World Championship before,” Cheah said in a statement today.

“The World Championships bring together the best teams from five continents, based on world rankings from the previous edition. For Asia, only six countries qualify, so it’s truly the sport’s elite level.”

Cheah said discussions with the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) are underway to finalise the decision, noting that Malaysia’s existing facilities — particularly the Arena Petanque Kuala Lumpur — place the country in a strong position to host.

“We already have the infrastructure and are ready anytime. Having such a facility right in the heart of the capital city is something few countries can boast,” he said, crediting Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for its support in developing the arena.

He added that hosting the championship would coincide neatly with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, providing an opportunity to showcase the nation’s sporting and tourism strengths.

The estimated hosting cost is around RM1.3 million, covering accommodation and meals for all participating teams.

Meanwhile, WPBF president Claude Azema voiced full confidence in Malaysia’s capability to deliver a world-class event.

“I came here to see whether Malaysia is capable of hosting a World Championship, and I’m confident it is,” he said.

“Malaysia has proven its ability through the SEA Games and other major events, and this is an excellent venue for a world-level tournament.” — November 6, 2025
