KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia will formally submit its proposed list of sports for the 2027 SEA Games once it takes over the chairmanship of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) immediately after the conclusion of the ongoing edition in Thailand.
Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said the 38 sports currently proposed for the 2027 Games remain tentative.
“As the custodian of multi-sport Games in Malaysia, NOC (National Olympic Committee) of Malaysia has a duty to protect and safeguard the interests of the SEA Games, the SEAGF Member NOCs and the Olympic Movement in the Southeast Asian region,” he wrote in a Facebook post today.
According to the OCM, Mohamad Norza also presented the progress update for the 34th SEA Games, scheduled to take place from September 18 to 29, 2027, across Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang and Johor during the SEAGF final council meeting for the 2023–2025 term held yesterday.
Last week, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh revealed that athletics, badminton, football, hockey and karate are among the 38 sports included in the provisional lineup for the 2027 Games.
The current SEA Games, hosted by Thailand, officially opens today at the Rajamangala National Stadium and will run until December 20 across Bangkok and Chonburi. – December 9, 2025
