KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s wheelchair tennis team is on course for a historic double gold at the ongoing Asean Para Games in Korat, Thailand, after dominating both the singles and doubles events.
Speaking to Scoop, Wheelchair Tennis Malaysia president Muhd Iqbal Sulaiman expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and medal prospects.
“With the support from the National Sports Council (NSC) and the National Sports Institute (NSI), all our players are more stable and focused in their games.
“Insha Allah, we hope to achieve an all-Malaysian final this time and avoid the near miss we had in Solo in 2022,” he said.
In the men’s singles, Abu Samah Borhan delivered a commanding performance, defeating Indonesia’s Kevin Sanjaya 6-0, 6-1 in just 40 minutes, using an aggressive approach and a strategic game plan set by coach Talha.
Top seed Mohd Yusshazwan Yusuf also advanced to the final after defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-4, demonstrating consistency and control on court.
In the doubles event, the pairing of Abu Samah and Mohd Yusshazwan cruised past the Laos team 6-0, 6-0 in just 30 minutes, showcasing strong coordination and tactical aggression.
Iqbal said the team’s elite development programme has been a key factor behind its sustained success.
“Our programme has allowed athletes like Abu Samah Borhan and Mohd Yusshazwan Yusuf to perform consistently across major competitions from the Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur and Solo, to the Hangzhou Asia Para Games, and even the Tokyo and Paris Paralympics proving the credibility and success of Wheelchair Tennis Malaysia,” he said.
“Insha Allah, we aim to defend our previous gold medals and achieve a clean sweep at this year’s Asean Para Games. The team is ready, disciplined and determined to show that Malaysia is among the best in the region,” he added.
The 13th Asean Para Games are being held in Korat, Thailand, from January 20 to 26.
The biennial multi-sport event features athletes with disabilities from across Southeast Asia competing in a range of disciplines, promoting sporting excellence and inclusivity in the region. — January 22, 2026
