FAM executive committee resigns en bloc, paving way for governance reset

KUALA LUMPUR – The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has confirmed that its entire Executive Committee for the 2025–2029 term has stepped down with immediate effect, a decision it says is intended to facilitate a governance reset and uphold the organisation’s integrity.

In a statement, FAM said the decision was made unanimously, taking into account organisational responsibility and without regard to personal interests or positions, following a situation that has drawn public attention.

“The Executive Committee has taken collective responsibility and recognised the need to act in a manner that safeguards the integrity of FAM,” the statement read.

FAM said the resignations were intended to protect the reputation and interests of the organisation and to reduce the risk of further adverse consequences that could affect Malaysian football as a whole.

The statement added that the move was also aimed at upholding the principles of good governance and accountability, particularly in circumstances where public confidence must be preserved.

“ The resignations would provide appropriate space for the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to independently assess, examine and, if necessary, address matters relating to FAM’s governance and administrative affairs,” it said.

FAM said the step would ensure that any necessary reforms could be implemented without interference or perceived conflicts and on the basis of a high level of trust.

The association also said the move demonstrated that service to Malaysian football took precedence over tenure of office, even though its members had been given a four-year mandate for the 2025–2029 term, by voluntarily stepping down after 11 months.

“The decision was aimed at restoring confidence among supporters, stakeholders, partners and the football community as a whole, stressing that maintaining institutional credibility was essential for the stability, sustainability and future development of Malaysian football,” it said

The association emphasised that it would continue to provide full cooperation to FIFA, AFC and all relevant stakeholders despite no longer holding office, and reaffirmed its commitment to the long-term interests of Malaysian football. – January 28, 2026
