KUALA LUMPUR – Former Malaysian Formula One (F1) driver Alex Yoong has been appointed as the head coach of the national e-Racing squad, in a move aimed at strengthening preparations for upcoming international sporting events.

Muhammad Naim Al Amin Saharudin, President of the Malaysian Electronic Sports Federation (MESF), said Alex’s extensive motorsport experience is expected to help elevate the national team’s performance in the discipline.

“This appointment is also part of the federation’s long-term plan to prepare for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya and the 2027 SEA Games,” he added.

“Alex brings invaluable experience and expertise, particularly in e-Racing.

“He will assume full-time duties starting this April, ensuring that the national squad’s training programme is conducted in a more structured and effective manner,” Naim said, following a joint working committee meeting with the National Sports Council (NSC) today.

In a related development, Naim revealed that, for the first time, national e-sports athletes have been included in NSC’s Podium Programme, officially recognising their contributions in the field.

For the full-time category, several game titles have been finalised, including eFootball, Identity V, and e-Racing.

Meanwhile, the women’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) team has been placed in the half-podium category, while the men’s team falls under the phased category. – March 5, 2026
