KUALA LUMPUR – The national men’s hockey team is set to return safely to Malaysia after being stranded in Ismailia, Egypt, for nearly three days following the World Cup Qualifiers.

Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the Malaysia Hockey Confederation (MHC) had to incur nearly RM250,000 in additional costs to bring the team home.

The squad had been stuck in Ismailia since Sunday after their flight from Cairo to Doha was cancelled amid the regional unrest.

Their onward connection from Doha to Kuala Lumpur with Qatar Airways was also affected, leaving the team stranded.

Speaking to Scoop, MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said new arrangements had to be made for the team to travel via Cairo to Jeddah and then onwards to Kuala Lumpur.

“All is well. The team is now on their way back from Jeddah and is expected to arrive in Malaysia at 12 am (at midnight today). The one-way journey costs approximately RM250,000, with additional expenses arising from the extended stay and the need for a safer route,” he said.

“Ensuring the safety of our players is our top priority, even if it means additional expenditure. They have sacrificed so much for the nation, and it is our duty to support them in return.

“Originally, the team was scheduled to travel via Qatar, but all flights were cancelled. We are appealing for refunds, though it is now at the airline’s discretion. Despite the setbacks, our focus remains on the welfare and safety of the team.”

Subahan also added that the players will finally return home in time to celebrate Hari Raya with their families.

Reports indicate that the contingent consists of 31 members, including players, coaches, and support staff, with each ticket costing around RM8,000.

Malaysia finished fourth in Ismailia, securing qualification for the World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands, which will be held from August 14. – March 11, 2026
