KUALA LUMPUR – The Speedy Tigers squad have been temporarily barred from speaking to the media on any matters relating to national hockey, according to sources.
This marks a departure from tradition, as national team players are typically approachable and have long been regarded as media-friendly.
Sources within the hockey fraternity confirmed that the directive will remain in place until the end of Hari Raya.
The move comes at a critical juncture, as the team prepares for the upcoming World Cup and Asian Games under newly appointed head coach, Brendon Carolan.
Carolan, who officially takes charge on April 1, has been tasked with revamping both the coaching staff and player line-up within a short timeframe, with the aim of improving Malaysia’s current world ranking of 15.
“At this stage, the main focus must be entirely on preparation, team cohesion, and implementing the new strategies introduced by Carolan.
“The players have been asked to refrain from speaking to the media until after Hari Raya to ensure that everyone remains fully focused and that no conflicting statements are made publicly.
“This period will allow the coaching team to properly assess the squad and make informed decisions without distractions,” a source told Scoop.
Sources added that the temporary restriction is also intended to prevent mixed messaging while Carolan evaluates the team.
“The ban is designed to maintain clarity and consistency in communication. By putting media engagements on hold until after Hari Raya, we can ensure that all messaging aligns with the plans and objectives set by Carolan.
“It is a short-term measure, but crucial in allowing the squad to concentrate fully on training and preparations for the World Cup and Asian Games,” the source added.
The Speedy Tigers now face an intense period of preparation under Carolan’s guidance, with a clear mandate to prioritise results and ranking recovery over public commentary. — March 18, 2026
