Documentation issues keep Bergson and Gallifuoco from making Harimau Malaya debuts

The duo will miss the national team's Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam on March 31

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s hopes of bolstering their squad for the Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam on March 31 have been temporarily stalled, as Brazilian-born striker Bergson Da Silva and Australian-born defender Giancarlo Gallifuoco will not be available due to pending documentation issues.

Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski confirmed at a press conference in Bukit Jalil today that the duo could not be called up for the final Group F qualifier, despite earlier optimism over their eligibility.

“I was updated that their registration won’t be completed in time, so they simply aren’t available for selection,” said Cklamovski.

Earlier this year, it was reported that both Bergson, who plays for Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), and Gallifuoco, a KL City defender, were close to obtaining Malaysian passports and FIFA clearance, and Cklamovski had anticipated awarding them their first caps against Vietnam.

However, both players were conspicuously absent from the 28-man squad announced on Thursday for the crucial qualifier.

The Australian coach revealed he had spoken to them and emphasised their eagerness to represent Malaysia.

“They have a strong desire to play for Malaysia and to do something special for the country that has given them so much. The positive is they’ll be available for the next camp,” he said.

Cklamovski added that Bergson and Gallifuoco are expected to join the national team for Malaysia’s ASEAN Championship campaign in July or the FIFA ASEAN Cup later this year.

The coach also addressed the absence of Spanish-born midfielder Nacho Mendez of JDT, confirming that he would miss the camp due to injury.

“For Mendez, it was clear to everyone that he suffered an injury in his last match a few days ago. Unfortunately, he has to be sidelined because of this,” said Cklamovski.

Despite the temporary setback, the coach remains optimistic, suggesting that Malaysia’s next international camp will see the inclusion of the talented imports, strengthening Harimau Malaya’s squad for upcoming competitions. – March 23, 2026
