KUALA LUMPUR – Former Olympian and World Cup player Maninderjit Singh has cautioned that changing Malaysia’s national hockey coach at this stage could be counterproductive.
Speaking to Scoop, Maninderjit highlighted the limited preparation time before a packed international calendar, urging stakeholders to temper expectations.
“Within the next five months, the national team will face the World Cup, the Asian Games, and the FIH Nations Cup,” he said.
“This transition period isn’t ideal for any team. Decisions like this should perhaps have waited until after the Asian Games.
“You can’t create too much upheaval in the squad, especially when motivation isn’t at its peak following a disappointing qualifying campaign.”
While acknowledging that a coaching change might produce different outcomes, Maninderjit stressed that player performance remains the decisive factor.
“You can change the coach, but if the players remain the same, the results at the international level may not differ significantly,” he said.
“This year really isn’t the right moment for a coaching switch because of the number of high-stakes tournaments coming up.”
Last week, the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) announced that Sarjit Singh’s contract as head coach would not be renewed following a series of underwhelming results. South African Brendon Carolan has been named his successor and will officially take charge from April 1.
Sarjit, a former national captain and Olympian, assumed the head coach role in March 2024 but faced mounting criticism as the Speedy Tigers struggled, with Malaysia’s world ranking slipping from 13th to 15th.
Their recent showing at the World Cup Qualifier in Ismailia, Egypt, underscored these challenges. Malaysia won just two of five matches, finishing fourth, and qualified for the World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands (August 15–30) based on ranking rather than results.
Carolan is already familiar with Malaysian hockey, having served as assistant coach to Arul Selvaraj during the 2022 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, where Malaysia claimed the title for the first time since the tournament began in 1983. He was also part of the coaching staff at the 2023 World Cup in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar, India.
With European experience, including a consultancy role at Belgian club Gantoise, Carolan is expected to arrive in Malaysia this week to begin preparations. He will have the authority to appoint his own backroom staff, with his key performance indicators centred on the Asian Games.
Currently ranked 15th globally, Malaysia face pressure to climb the rankings, with the FIH Nations Cup in June offering an opportunity to regain lost ground. – March 24, 2026
