KUALA LUMPUR — The 2026 Malaysia Cup final will go ahead at the iconic TM National Stadium, offering a final flourish before the venue temporarily shuts its doors for essential upgrades.
Malaysian Football League (MFL) president Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan confirmed that an agreement with Perbadanan Stadium Malaysia (PSM) will allow the showpiece event to be staged at the Bukit Jalil venue despite impending maintenance works.
“The Malaysia Cup final is still on at the TM National Stadium. Following discussions between MFL and PSM, we’ve been given the window to complete the final here,” he told reporters when met during the MFL Football Clinic held at the stadium today.
However, he indicated that scheduling for the following season could be affected, particularly the FA Cup final, which is typically held earlier in the calendar.
“Beyond that, for the 2026/27 season, we will need to review the situation. The FA Cup final may be impacted depending on the timeline,” he added.
The football clinic — the first of its kind organised by MFL — was held in collaboration with PSM and involved 40 children aged between eight and 12, giving them a rare opportunity to play at the national stadium while celebrating the league’s sponsors.
Meanwhile, PSM chief executive officer Iliyas Jamil explained that the temporary closure is necessary to facilitate the replacement of the athletics track as part of preparations for the 2027 SEA Games.
“The closure is required to upgrade the track in readiness for the SEA Games. We are identifying a suitable window to accommodate the Malaysia Cup final within this period,” he said.
He also expressed hope that the FA Cup final could still be hosted at the venue, though this would depend on the progress of the works.
“For 2027 and beyond, we do not foresee any issues. We intend to continue hosting both the Malaysia Cup and FA Cup finals at this stadium,” he added. – April 4, 2026
