KUALA LUMPUR – The Paralympic Council Malaysia (PCM) has expressed renewed confidence under the new leadership of the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS), praising their deep understanding of para sports and commitment to athletes.

Speaking to Scoop, PCM president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin said that the Youth and Sports Minister Dr.Taufiq Johari’s proactive engagement and hands-on approach have created an environment where para-athletes and programmes can truly thrive.

“Alhamdulillah, the Taufiq has been supporting everyone. What I particularly like is that he is young, and his concern is with the younger generation, the youth, and also the para-athletes,” Megat said when contacted.

He added that Taufiq’s focus extends beyond athletes within national programmes to those outside the system.

“He wants to make changes, and he has that connection with young athletes, for example those aged 14 to 21 in Asian Youth Paralympic events and Para Sukma. His support is not just policy as he is giving all-out help to everyone, especially the para-community,” he said.

Megat also praised the Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol, noting that his shared understanding of athletes’ struggles and ambitions has strengthened PCM’s partnership with KBS.

“Having Mordi is also a plus point because he is young and understands what each young person wants to do and contribute. These young leaders are very focused and the connectivity is very important,” he said.

According to Megat, both ministers have not interfered in PCM’s policies and have allowed the council to implement its programmes autonomously.

“So far, there is no interference in any of the policies which have been made by PCM. I am the one who informs them, gives advice, and collaborates when needed,” he said.

He highlighted that the support has helped PCM expand its initiatives across the para-sports community, including beyond competitive athletics.

“It’s not only about sports. There are also online, social media, and other platforms where people with disabilities are active. The ministers’ focus on accessibility, welfare, and opportunity is very encouraging,” he said.

Megat said the improved partnership with KBS has given PCM confidence to continue advancing para sports initiatives while mentoring the next generation.

“We work closely hand-in-hand with the ministerial office. They are very passionate about helping not only people with disabilities but everyone involved in sport and youth programmes,” he added. – April 9, 2026
