KUALA LUMPUR – Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) will face defending champions Al-Ahli in a blockbuster AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) quarter-final clash, marking a historic moment for the Southern Tigers on the continental stage.

The high-stakes encounter was confirmed after Al-Ahli edged past Al-Duhail SC 1-0 in their West Zone Round of 16 tie, which extended into extra time in the early hours of this morning.

Prior to this, the ACLE quarter-final draw held on March 25 had already pitted JDT against the winner of the Al-Ahli–Al-Duhail tie.

However, the fixture was delayed due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, forcing JDT to wait for confirmation of their opponents.

That wait has now ended, with the Malaysian champions set for their biggest test yet, especially as this marks the club’s first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals of Asia’s premier club competition.

In a tightly contested battle at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, Al-Ahli eventually broke the deadlock through Riyad Mahrez, whose stunning free-kick in the 117th minute sealed victory and progression.

The result confirmed Al-Ahli as JDT’s next opponents, setting up a mouth-watering showdown in Jeddah.

Reflecting on the hard-fought win, Mahrez admitted Al-Ahli had struggled to find their rhythm.

“It was a difficult match. I don’t think we played well, which is why it went to extra time,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters.

“They are a good side, Al-Duhail, but in the end we found a way through the free-kick, and we’re happy to go through.”

The quarter-final is scheduled to take place at King Abdullah Sports City on Friday, April 17, with kick-off slated for 10.45pm Malaysian time, subject to change.

Elsewhere, four-time champions Al-Hilal were eliminated after losing on penalties to Al-Sadd, adding further intrigue to this year’s competition. – April 14, 2026
