KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s sports sector is entering a new phase as the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) appoints two senior leaders to oversee key national agencies.
Youth and Sports Minister Taufiq Johari confirmed that Datuk Seri Dr. Zulkharnain Ismail has been named Chairman of the National Sports Institute (NSI), while Dr. Helmy Haja Mydin will assume the role of Chairman at Malaysia Stadium Corporation (PSM).
In a statement, Taufiq noted that he personally handed over the letters of appointment to both individuals, describing the move as a strategic effort to bolster the country’s sporting framework.
“Both figures bring extensive experience, professional expertise and a vision that is greatly needed to strengthen the national sports ecosystem,” he said.
Dr. Zulkharnain Ismail, a distinguished orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon with over two decades of experience, has previously served as president of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association. He has also contributed to advancing orthopaedic training and clinical standards through international fellowships in joint and tumour reconstruction.
His expertise in sports medicine and leadership is expected to enhance NSI’s role in athlete development, particularly in areas including performance science, injury management, and rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, Dr. Helmy Haja Mydin brings a broad profile spanning medicine, policy, and corporate governance. A respiratory specialist, he heads the Lung Centre at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur and has been active in national health advocacy, including tobacco control and public health policy.
Helmy also serves as chairman of PERKESO Rehabilitation Sdn Bhd, co-founded the Social & Economic Research Initiative (SERI), and holds board positions in various national agencies, such as the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation and the Medical Device Authority.
Taufiq expressed confidence that both appointments would bring direction and clarity to their respective institutions.
“I believe these appointments will provide meaningful benefits as well as clear direction to two important institutions under the KBS,” he said.
