KUALA LUMPUR — The FootGolf Association of Malaysia (FGAM) is targeting a podium finish at the 2026 Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG) World Cup in Acapulco, Mexico, which begins today until June 7.
For this edition, FGAM has sent a 24-member national squad, comprising 18 players in the men’s open category and six in the senior division.
The team heads into the tournament with confidence following an encouraging campaign at the 2023 World Cup in Orlando, United States, where Malaysia’s men’s open side reached the quarter-finals.
The national squad also impressed at the 2024 Asian Cup, further raising expectations ahead of this year’s competition.
Buoyed by those performances, FGAM has set higher ambitions for the tournament, with the men’s open team aiming for a podium finish, while the senior side is targeting at least a quarter-final berth.
The Malaysian contingent arrived at Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico yesterday, where they were welcomed by the First Secretary of the Malaysian Embassy in Mexico, Jesse Quiban, and Third Secretary (Administration and Consular), Mohamed Amin Abdul Rashid.
Speaking to Scoop, FGAM vice-president Jeffrey Cottam said the squad is entering the tournament in high spirits and believes the players are capable of competing against some of the world’s strongest nations.
“Our preparations for the World Cup have gone very well and the players are highly motivated ahead of the tournament. The atmosphere within the squad is extremely positive because many of the players have gained valuable international experience over the past few years,” he said.
“We saw encouraging progress during the previous World Cup in Orlando and also at the Asian Cup, where our players proved that Malaysia can compete at a high level against established FootGolf nations. Those results have given the team greater belief and confidence going into this edition.”
Jeffrey added that the association is hopeful the team can produce its best-ever performance on the world stage if the players maintain their composure and consistency throughout the tournament.
“This World Cup will be one of the toughest yet because of the quality and number of participants involved, but we believe our players have prepared themselves both technically and mentally for the challenge.
“With the strong support we have received from our sponsors, partners and everyone behind the national team, we are optimistic that Malaysia can achieve a better result than in previous editions and possibly challenge for a place on the podium,” he added.
The national team’s campaign is backed by Kaki Jersi as the official kit sponsor, while MBI Selangor has continued to support the development of the squad.
Meanwhile, microLEAP is also supporting the team’s journey to the FootGolf World Cup as an official partner of the national side.
The 2026 FIFG World Cup is expected to feature more than 1,200 players from 60 countries, making it one of the most competitive FootGolf tournaments in the world, with participants set to face intense technical and mental challenges throughout the competition. – May 27, 2026
