KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) at the end of the month after both parties mutually agreed to part ways, closing a chapter defined by notable achievements, immense promise and a frustrating run of injuries.

BAM confirmed today that Tze Yong’s departure will take effect on June 30, with both sides concluding that the move would best support the 26-year-old’s ambitions as he prepares for the next phase of his career.

The decision follows discussions between the national body and the player, whose progress over the past two years has been hampered by a series of injuries that stalled his rise on the international stage.

Tze Yong reached a career-high world ranking of No. 14 in November 2023 and established himself as one of Malaysia’s leading men’s singles players.

His achievements include a men’s singles silver medal and mixed team gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, as well as a gold medal at the Badminton Asia Team Championships.

He was also part of the Malaysian squads that secured bronze medals at the Sudirman Cup and Sudirman Cup.

However, his momentum was severely disrupted by injury setbacks, including a back injury in 2024 and an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 2025. Both required surgery and lengthy rehabilitation, derailing what had appeared to be a promising upward trajectory.

BAM president Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz paid tribute to Tze Yong’s contributions and resilience during his time with the national setup.

“Tze Yong has been an important member of the national team and has represented Malaysia with pride on the international stage.

“While injuries unfortunately disrupted his progress in recent years, his resilience throughout the rehabilitation process has been commendable.

“After in-depth discussions, both parties agreed that this is the best path forward at this stage of his career. On behalf of BAM, I would like to thank Tze Yong for his contributions to Malaysian badminton and wish him good health and continued success in his future endeavours,” he said in a statement.

Tze Yong also expressed gratitude to BAM, the coaching staff, support personnel and his teammates for their support throughout his journey with the national team.

“I would like to thank BAM for the opportunities, guidance and support I have received over the years. Representing Malaysia has always been an honour and I am grateful to everyone who has been part of my journey.

“For now, my priority is to fully recover and regain my fitness. I will take some time away from competition to focus on my rehabilitation before returning to the court, and I look forward to the next chapter of my career,” he said.

While his immediate focus remains on recovery, Tze Yong’s departure is likely to spark speculation over his next move, with the former Commonwealth Games silver medallist set to begin a new chapter away from the national setup. — June 25, 2026
