KUALA LUMPUR – The Lightning Cup International Badminton Championship will return for its third edition with a prize pool of more than RM100,000 when it takes place at Pavilion Hall, SkyIndoor Themepark, Resorts World Genting, from Sept 3 to 6.

Organised by Sports Arena Sentosa in collaboration with Petaling BC, the tournament is expected to attract hundreds of players from Malaysia and abroad, further cementing its reputation as one of the region’s premier international badminton festivals for the open, amateur and veteran categories.

Organising chairman Datuk Jack Koh said the Lightning Cup has evolved beyond being just another tournament, becoming a platform that unites badminton enthusiasts of all ages and nationalities.

“The objective of the Lightning Cup is to provide an international-standard platform for badminton lovers.

“We want to create a tournament that is not only highly competitive but also gives amateurs, veterans and emerging talents the opportunity to experience competing in a world-class environment,” he told Scoop.

A total of 69 categories will be contested, including the open, amateur, age group, combined age group, mixed three-on-three (3P), parent-and-child, and VIP invitational events.

To ensure a level playing field, players ranked within the Badminton World Federation (BWF) top 100 will not be eligible to compete.

The tournament will also retain its age-group format, enabling veteran players aged 70 and above to continue competing at the international level.

Organisers expect participation to grow further this year, with entries anticipated from several Asian countries and beyond, as players compete for the lucrative prize money and valuable international exposure.

Registration is now open to all eligible players and organisers expect strong interest from both local and international participants. — July 18, 2026
