KUALA LUMPUR – Missing out on the 2026 Union Cup title was never the ultimate measure of success for Malaysia 15s head coach K. Dinesvaran, who believes accelerating the development of the next generation of national players is a far greater investment than lifting silverware.
The coach, better known as Duke, said he deliberately resisted the temptation to field a squad packed with experienced players in pursuit of the title, opting instead to expose a youthful side to the demands and pressure of international rugby.
“I spent several days thinking about whether I wanted to win this tournament or whether I wanted these players to grow by putting them under immense pressure.
“I made a promise to the players and the Malaysia Rugby Union (MRU) that I would build this team into one capable of competing at a much higher level.
“If my only objective was to win, I could have selected all the senior and experienced players, but that isn’t what I’m trying to achieve,” he told Scoop.
Dinesvaran revealed that 12 players earned their international debuts during the tournament, describing the experience as invaluable in accelerating their development ahead of tougher assignments.
“I think 12 of them made their first appearances. This tournament opened their eyes to the reality that playing at a higher level is completely different from competing in the Agong’s Cup.
“They now understand that they need to become stronger and fitter. That’s why I started with the younger players, and they fought until the very end. I’m extremely proud of the commitment they showed, and so far everything has gone according to plan,” he said.
Malaysia, making their maiden appearance in the Union Cup, produced an encouraging campaign by finishing runners-up after a 39-18 defeat to the Philippines in the final at Nonthaburi Stadium in Bangkok.
Held from July 12 to 18, the inaugural Union Cup featured eight teams — hosts Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Laos and the Asian Barbarians, an invitational side comprising standout players from across the continent.
Although they returned home without the trophy, the Bunga Raya 15s earned praise for their discipline, resilience and fighting spirit throughout the tournament, with the 12 debutants gaining invaluable international exposure.
The campaign also served as a crucial stepping stone ahead of the Asia Rugby Championship Division One in December, where the experience gained in Bangkok is expected to prove invaluable against stronger opposition. – July 20, 2026
