GLASGOW – The Malaysian contingent had its best medal haul yet on the third day of the 2026 Commonwealth Games today, winning two gold and a bronze medals, courtesy of the weightlifting team.
Weightlifter Mohamad Aniq Kasdan won the country’s first gold medal of the Games with a stunning 273 kilogramme (kg) combined lift in the men’s 60 kg category at Scottish Event Campus Armadillo.
He also set two Games records, a 152 kg lift in the clean and jerk, and the overall lift of 273 kg.
The second gold came from Muhamad Aznil Bidin in the men’s 65 kg category, with a combined lift of 299 kg.
He set three records en route to securing his third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal – a snatch of 133kg, a clean and jerk of 166 kg and a combined total of 299 kg.
The last medal of the day came from female weightlifter Irene Jane Henry, who lifted a combined 167 kg in her Commonwealth Games debut in the women’s 48 kg category for the bronze medal.
In lawn bowling, men’s singles player Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple and women’s pair Aleena Ahmad Nawawi-Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman were on track to qualify for the semi-finals as they extended their winning streak at the group stage to four matches today.
In other sports, women artistic gymnasts Yeap Kang Xian and Cadence Teh Zi Qi placed eighth and 12th respectively in the all-round individual final, the men’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team lost to Scotland 6-10 in their second group match and the national swimming quartet of Khiew Hoe Yean, Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal, Lim Yin Chuen and Tan Khai Xin placed fifth in the men’s 4×200 metre freestyle relay with a time of 7 minutes and 23.72 seconds.
Tomorrow, weightlifter Muhammad Erry Hidayat will try his best to win his first Commonwealth gold medal in the final of the men’s 79 kg category at 3 am Tuesday Malaysian time.
Other medal prospects include men’s gymnast Mohammad Sharul Aimy Kamaru Hisam in the men’s floor exercise final and women’s artistic gymnast Rachel Yeoh Li Wen in the uneven bars final.
Thanks to today’s haul, Malaysia is currently seventh in the medal tally with two gold and two bronze, while defending champions Australia is first with 17 gold, nine silver and 13 bronze, followed by England, second (4,9,6) and hosts Scotland third with four gold and two silver. – July 27, 2026
