KUALA LUMPUR — Selangor Aquatics Centre will open its doors to SUKMA 2026 with Water Polo on Aug 12, as the state enters the final phase of preparations to host the Games.
The event will also mark the start of the aquatic competitions for SUKMA and Para SUKMA 2026.
In a statement, Darul Ehsan Facilities Management Sdn Bhd (DEFM) said the newly revamped facility, formerly known as the Darul Ehsan Aquatics Centre, was officially rebranded today at a ceremony officiated by Selangor Crown Prince Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.
The upgrading project, which began in early October last year, included improvements to the landscaping and surrounding environment, swimming pools, public facilities, pump systems and safety features.
DEFM said the works were carried out to ensure the facility operates more efficiently and safely while meeting current standards, as well as providing a more comfortable and conducive environment for athletes and visitors.
The company said the rebranding reflected its continued efforts to ensure sports facilities owned by the Selangor State Government remained at their best, while supporting the state’s hosting of SUKMA and Para SUKMA 2026 and strengthening sports development.
Speaking at the ceremony, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the revamp had equipped the centre to support athlete training and host national and international-level competitions, while also serving as a safe and conducive recreational space for the community.
Amirudin said Water Polo on Aug 12 would be an important milestone as Selangor moves into the final phase of preparations for the Games.
“The Water Polo competition, which will open the aquatic events on 12 August, is a symbol that all preparations have now entered their final phase and that Selangor is ready to welcome athletes and contingents from across the country,” he said.
He said the state’s focus extended beyond upgraded infrastructure, with the ultimate aim of encouraging more young people to embrace sport as a way of life, producing world-class athletes and building a healthier, disciplined and united society.
Amirudin also described investment in quality public facilities as a strategic investment in human capital and the well-being of the people, rather than merely an expenditure.
Amirudin also expressed his appreciation to DEFM, Selangor’s Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship executive councillor, TETO Engineering Sdn Bhd, Khairi Consult Sdn Bhd, state government agencies and all parties involved in completing the project according to plan.
The 22nd SUKMA will be held in Selangor from Sept 12 to 20, with more than 11,000 athletes and officials expected to compete across 39 sports.
The Games will mark Selangor’s first time hosting the biennial multi-sport event since 1998. — August 8, 2026
