KUALA LUMPUR — Kuala Lumpur City FC’s troubled start to the new Super League season could take another twist, with their next two matches also at risk of postponement as an influenza outbreak continues to sweep through the squad.
The City Boys were already forced to postpone their opening fixture against Negeri Sembilan FC at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Paroi last Saturday after a significant number of players were affected by the illness.
Now, KL City chairman Syed Yazid Syed Omar has revealed that five players and a team official have tested positive for influenza, while several others are also displaying symptoms.
According to medical reports received from a government hospital, the affected players are required to isolate and rest for at least a week, leaving KL City facing a potential shortage of available players for their upcoming fixtures.
“I have received medical reports from the government hospital confirming that the players involved tested positive for influenza and need to isolate and rest.
“I have also received the letters confirming their positive results, and this means there is a strong possibility that our next two matches may have to be postponed because we do not have enough players,” Syed Yazid told Scoop when contacted.
KL City are scheduled to face Kuching City on Wednesday before hosting Brunei DPMM three days later, with both matches set to be played at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras.
Should both fixtures also be postponed, KL City would see their first three Super League matches of the season disrupted before they have even had the chance to begin their campaign.
The situation is particularly frustrating for the City Boys, who had hoped to make a strong start to the new season and begin collecting valuable points, only to be hit by a health crisis beyond the club’s control.
The concern also extends beyond the five players who have tested positive, with several other members of the squad reportedly experiencing symptoms and requiring rest as the club attempts to prevent the illness from spreading further.
Syed Yazid said KL City have the necessary medical documentation regarding the affected players and will continue monitoring the condition of the squad before a decision is made on the matches against Kuching City and DPMM.
For now, the final status of both fixtures remains uncertain, pending further developments and confirmation from the relevant authorities. – August 24, 2026
