Concerns over rice supply shortages and industry monopoly can be averted if Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas) fulfils 10 obligations following the government's move to extend its concession for the distribution of the staple food until 2031.
Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu has brushed aside speculation connecting the price hikes in imported rice to Bernas’ monopoly. Instead, he said that the surge in prices was mainly due to a 60% increase in the international market price of imported white rice.
