Asiad: Tze Yong joins Pearly-Thinaah in quarter-finals

Malaysian men’s singles shuttler next faces daunting task against Japan’s Kodai Naraoka

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong is through to the quarter-finals of the individual event at the Hangzhou Asian Games after defeating Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen.

The world number 19 took 39 minutes to win 21-17, 21-12 in straight sets.

Tze Yong will be playing Japan’s world number three Kodai Naraoka for a place in the semi-finals. 

Meanwhile, Malaysian women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah also marched into the quarters after defeating Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai.

The world number nine pair, who are also making their first Asiad appearance, cruised past the Thai pair 21-15, 21-17 in a match which lasted just 39 minutes.

The 2023 Hong Kong Open runners-up will face South Korea’s world number two pair, Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee, in the next round. – October 4, 2023
