EPF chief Amir Hamzah, academic Zulkifli Hasan sworn in as senators

It is speculated Amir Hamzah will be appointed as second finance minister during Anwar’s cabinet reshuffle

KUALA LUMPUR – Employee Provident Fund (EPF) CEO Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan is one of two individuals who have been sworn in as senators in the Dewan Negara today.

This comes amid speculation that he will be appointed as second finance minister during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s cabinet reshuffle at 11am today.

Amir Hamzah, 56, joined EPF in March 2021. Prior to that, he served as Tenaga Nasional Bhd CEO from 2019 to 2021.

He is also the son of former Petronas chairman and president Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin.

Also sworn in as senator was associate professor Zulkifli Hasan, who is the former deputy rector (student development and community engagement) of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and ex-dean of Faculty of Syariah and Law, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia.

He pursued his Master of Comparative Laws degree at the same university in 2004, and subsequently received his PhD in 2011, from Durham University.

Zulkifli has also previously worked with the Education Ministry, having been a member of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU) Technical Committee and Student Union Working Committee from 2019 to 2020, as well as the chairman of the National Futsal Disciplinary Committee (2019 to 2021).

He also focuses on shariah governance and regulation in Islamic finance in his research.

As such, he has been a committee member of numerous corporations and agencies, including Affin Islamic Bank, Exim Bank, Zurich Takaful, and the Department of Islamic Development (Jakim). – December 12, 2023
