Senior Kedah police officer arrested over fatal hit-and-run of Form 5 student

Top cop says case also probed under criminal investigations leading to offence of killing a person

KUALA LUMPUR – Ipoh police have arrested a senior officer from the Kedah police contingent, following a fatal road accident here today.  

In a statement, Ipoh police chief Yahaya Hassan said the 44-year-old individual will also be remanded on December 16 for further investigations.  

At 12.40pm today, the Perak police received information from the public that an accident occurred at Jalan Taman Jati here involving a Perodua Ativa and a Yamaha motorcycle.   

According to an autopsy, Yahaya revealed that the victim, who was 17 years old, had suffered chest and abdominal injuries caused by the crash, leading to his death at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver sustained no injuries.  

The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.  

“At the same time, the police will also investigate from other angles, including criminal investigations that lead to the offence of killing a person under Section 302 of the Penal Code.  

“The police will not protect anyone, including their own officers, if they have strong evidence,” Yahaya said.  

Anyone who saw or has information about the incident is asked to contact Inspector Jong Pit Chiao at 016-884 9163.  

However, the police also urge the public against forming speculations that could obstruct their investigation, or incite public disharmony.  

Video clips of the incident went viral on social media. It occurred near the main gate of SMK Jati, Ipoh, when the victim was en route home after school hours. – December 15, 2023
