KUALA LUMPUR – Police have begun investigations into controversial blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris over a video that allegedly insulted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The probe against Wan Azri, who goes by the monikers “Papagomo” and “Sir Azri,” was confirmed by the deputy director of Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department, Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, in a statement today.

“Investigations (into Wan Azri) concern a live video on December 16, which humiliated the prime minister.

“The 1-hour-and-32-minute long video titled ‘DSAI Penyakit Misteri Tiada Penawar AIDS’ (‘DSAI is a mystery disease with no AIDS cure’) was uploaded on the ‘Sir Azri’ YouTube channel and can still be viewed online,” Rusdi said.

However, the YouTube channel in question is no longer accessible as at press time.

Rusdi added that investigations are being carried out under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for insulting behaviour, Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.

“Investigations will be conducted by the CID’s classified crime investigation unit’s prosecution and legal division.

“The case is still in the investigation stage. The public is advised against making speculations or comments that could disrupt the investigation process,” Rusdi added.

He also said that stern action will be taken, without compromise, against any party that uses social media platforms to elaborate on or manipulate issues that touch on public peace, moral principles or slander.

The public is also cautioned against fanning the flames on any alleged wrongdoing.

No stranger to controversy, Wan Azri, a former Umno Youth executive council member, was previously found guilty of injuring and hurling disrespectful and insulting words at Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman

For the offence, Wan Azri was fined RM2,100 by the Kajang magistrates’ court on September 12.

Wan Azri has also been sued by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil over an allegation that the minister had given a political speech at a mosque in Rawang, Selangor prior to the six state elections in August. – December 18, 2023
