KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated he will not draw his monthly salary as prime minister until the economy has improved.
Similarly, he said the 20% salary cut for ministers would remain.
“There is (economic) improvement but it is not completely recovered,” he said at a press conference after the cabinet retreat at Cyberjaya today.
“If the economy recovers in three years, we will review… this salary cut is appropriate, but I would like to thank them (ministers) for their willingness to make a bit of sacrifice.”
Anwar on December 5, 2022, after being appointed prime minister, said he would not take any form of government salary as both prime minister and finance minister.
This was in line with his promise made during the campaign for the 2022 general election.
During the campaign, Anwar said he would not take a monthly salary if he was appointed prime minister to show his solidarity with the people who were struggling with the high cost of living.
The cabinet also agreed with the decision of a 20% salary cut, reflecting that the ministers were also concerned with the people’s situation. – January 18, 2024
