Man behind women? Nga’s post on X draws flak from netizens

Social media users call out grammatical errors, ‘overboard’ praises for PM and wife, ‘misogynistic’ tone

KUALA LUMPUR – Social media users have spared no punches over a post on X by Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming which contained grammatical errors and allegedly hinted at misogyny.

Sharing a photo on X of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sitting behind his wife, Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in an event today, Nga posted: “People says ‘behind every successful man there is a women’, this morning we would like to say ‘behind every successful women there must be a man [sic].”

Nga also tagged Anwar and Wan Azizah’s X handles, and used the hashtag  #StrongerTogether along with the hand-heart emoji.

However, netizens were quick to speak their minds, with some describing his post as unnecessarily adulatory.

User @HjMuzafar merely said “industrial grade fan”, while @CondorHero6 used the words “shoe licker”.

@ChrystianVII said: “We elected MPs into Parliament, not suck-ups. You’ve done your fair share to get where you are. Now you guys actually (have to) start working like a proper government, not Anwar’s suck-ups”.

While Nga may have intended his “behind every successful women (sic) there must be a man” remark as a pun referring to the photo, one commenter pointed out its misogynistic tone.

“There must be a man? Are you a misogynist?” user @me_mocha98 asked.

Other netizens noted the grammatical errors in Nga’s post and decided to share some advice.

“‘Every’ is singular, so it’s ‘woman’, not ‘women’!” user @Kimmy23136668 commented.

“Weird string of words and bad grammar, minister dude,” said user @twitsterboy.

“As a minister,…please improve your English,” user @tstlks said.

One decided to dredge up Nga’s recent gaffes, such as the incident where his official car had “unintentionally” tailgated an ambulance.

“Behind every ambulance is Nga’s vehicle,” quipped user @llanggggg, a comment echoed by several others.

Nga has been in the spotlight over a few blunders, that while perhaps unintentional, have brought him social media scorn.

Besides the tailgating incident, another recent one was his proposal for Chinese new villages in Selangor to be recognised as Unesco World Heritage sites – a sensitive issue for the Malay community here.

Last year, he handed out mock cheques that included his party DAP’s logo for school donations, prompting criticism that he was doing so for political mileage. – February 25, 2024
