KUALA LUMPUR – The Foreign Ministry has confirmed that no Malaysians were injured in the bomb explosion that took place at Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru, India, yesterday.
This information was conveyed via the Malaysian Consulate General in Chennai, it said in a statement.
However, the consulate is still following reports related to the incident.
“At least eight people, including three cafe staff and a customer, were reported injured in the explosion that occurred around 1pm local time.
“According to local authorities, no Malaysians, especially Malaysian students, were affected in the bomb explosion incident.”
“The students were reported to be attending classes on their campus at that time,” the ministry said in a statement.
Simultaneously, the ministry urged all Malaysians in Bengaluru to stay updated on the latest developments regarding the matter.
“They are advised to take precautionary measures, adhere to travel warnings from local authorities, and avoid crowded places as investigations into the incident are still ongoing.”
The ministry said Malaysians who require consulate assistance can contact the Consulate General of Malaysia in Chennai at the address No. 7 (Old No. 3) 1st Street, Cenotaph Road Teynampet, Chennai 600 018 Tamil Nadu, India, or call 0091 44 2433 4434/35/36.
Meanwhile, Hindustan Times quoted Karnataka’s deputy chief minister, D.K. Shivakumar, as saying that the suspect responsible for the incident has been identified as a man aged between 28 to 30 years old.
He entered the cafe during breakfast hours, purchased a coupon for rava idli, but left without consuming it, leaving behind a bag containing an improvised explosive device (IED).
According to Shivakumar, the bomb had a one-hour timer, and the explosion occurred precisely an hour later.
The individual was identified through CCTV footage, showing him entering the cafe, obtaining a coupon for rava idli from one counter, placing the bag, and then leaving the premises. – March 2, 2024
