KUALA LUMPUR – Tabung Haji (TH) has announced a 3.1% profit distribution for 2023 after zakat, the pilgrim’s fund said today.

Its total profit distribution for last year was RM2.72 billion, benefiting more than 9.15 million depositors.

The 3.1% profits are the same as earned for the previous year, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar at a press conference today.

For 2022, TH distributed RM2.65 billion in profits to 8.8 million depositors.

“In TH’s 60 years, the cumulative amount of profits distributed has been RM42.88 billion until now,” Na’im added.

Also present at his press conference today were TH chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain, group managing director and chief executive officer Syed Hamadah Syed Othman, and group finance executive director Mustakim Mohamad.

Rashid said 2023 was the third year the economy had been in recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that TH was able to maintain the same distribution rate as the previous three years despite some impact on its investments.

He said TH’s performance in 2023 was driven by sharia-compliant investments in fixed income instruments that generated 52% of total income. Another 24% was  contributed by equity investments.

“Returns from real estate investments and the money market also contribute 24% to TH’s total income,” he said.

Na’im today also announced TH payments of RM101 million in zakat paid by depositors to all state Islamic religious councils for 2023.

“With this, TH hopes that the zakat payments will help the government’s efforts to eradicate poverty nationwide.”

The total zakat paid out for this purpose on behalf of depositors is RM1.37 billion to date, he added. – April 2, 2024
