KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is being investigated regarding the declaration of assets, said top graft buster Tan Sri Azam Baki.

As a result of the investigation, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) issued two of Dr Mahathir’s sons with notices to declare their assets under Section 36 of the MACC Act 2009.

“I don’t intend to go into details about the case, about their wrongdoings.

“Let MACC continue the investigation first (then) I’ll think of a suitable time for us to announce the findings,” he told reporters after launching MACC’s branch office in Gua Musang, Kelantan today.

The MACC had served notices on Dr Mahathir’s sons – Mirzan and Tan Sri Mokhzani – to declare all movable and immovable assets in their possession, here and abroad, within 30 days from the date on the notice.

Mirzan’s notice was served on January 18 and Mokhzani’s on January 26.

The notices to declare their assets were issued under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009.

In Mirzan’s case, the agency is investigating his business activities linked to the sale and acquisition of government-linked companies while probing into information in the Panama Papers published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in 2016.

Mokhzani’s name did not appear in the Panama Papers.

However, both brothers are being investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Meanwhile, last month, another of Dr Mahathir’s sons, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, said he believed this father was the real target of MACC’s probe. – April 25, 2024
