KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested five family members of the attacker who killed two junior officers at the Ulu Tiram police station last week under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said they were detained under Sosma after the remand period ended today.
Previously, it was reported that police had obtained remand orders for seven individuals to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Those remanded included five members of the suspect’s family and two students from local higher education institutions.
Police later released the two university students who were arrested after receiving instructions from the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
The students are a 22-year-old Malay male from a private college and a 21-year-old Malay woman who studies at a training institute.
“Bukit Aman’s Special Branch will conduct investigations under Sosma, while the criminal investigation department will proceed with investigations pertaining to Section 302 of the Penal Code and the Arms Act.
“So the investigation will be carried out simultaneously, no issues,” Razarudin said during a press conference today.
Commenting on the differing statements made by him regarding the suspect’s connection with Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), Razarudin once again insisted that the suspect had no links to the group.
“As previously stated, his father is suspected to be a member of JI, which is corroborated by our data and records. The suspicion (that the son was also a JI member) was initially emphasised during the investigation.
“When we interviewed witnesses from the neighbourhood, we discovered that this family is highly isolated, with minimal social involvement.
“The youngest daughter hasn’t attended school, and the man who was shot dead (the suspect) only completed education up to Year 4. His brother stopped at Year 5, while another sister stopped schooling after Year 6.
“When we summoned 47 witnesses from the police data, we discovered that the suspect had absolutely no connection with JI, despite his father being initially listed in our records.
“I must only say what is the truth but people often ‘spin’ what I say,” he added.
In the 2.45am incident last Friday, police constables Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, died after they were attacked by a man armed with a machete, who then seized two firearms from the officers.
Another police officer was injured when shot during the incident and is stable in hospital. – May 24, 2024
