Long jumper Latif Romly leaps to fourth world para title in Kobe

Perlis-born athlete jumps 7.30m to top podium ahead of rivals from Ecuador, Colombia

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Abdul Latif Romly continued to chalked up honours for Malaysia by winning the world long jump title for the fourth time at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, today. 

The 27-year-old leapt 7.30m to win the T20 (intellectual impairment) long jump gold medal after the first, third, fourth and fifth jumps were cancelled and he only managed 6.34m in the last jump. 

He had won the title at Doha 2015, London 2017 and Paris 2023. 

Meanwhile, Roberto Carlos Chala Espinoza of Ecuador (6.95m) and Jhon Sebastian Obando Asprilla of Colombia (6.84m) won the silver and bronze. 

Another national representative, Zulkifly Abdullah, finished the competition in 12th place out of 13 participants after recording a distance of 6.02m. 

The Perlis-born Latif had confirmed his slot for the Paris Paralympics after winning the gold medal in last year’s World Para Championships in Paris with a jump of 7.40m.

Latif is the two-time defending Paralympic champion after triumphs at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. – May 25, 2024
