KUALA LUMPUR – Some 123 foreign nationals, including children, had a “rude awakening” at 1am today as authorities descended on an illegal settlement in Sentul.
During the raid, some of them resorted to climbing roofs or locking themselves in to evade immigration checks.
Immigration Director-General Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the four-year-old illegal housing had electricity supply and suspected that locals were helping to supply power.
“Each foreigner pays about RM400 in monthly rent. Most of them are working or doing business nearby. Many were found without valid travel documents or overstayed here.
“The settlement also has convenience stores for the foreigners,” he said in a statement.
Of the 123 checked, 95 were from Myanmar, 21 were Indian nationals and seven were Indonesians. They will be investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
The raid was also joined by police’s General Operations Force, the National Registration Department, Civil Defence and Kuala Lumpur City Hall. – May 28, 2024
