KUALA LUMPUR – Philippines national head coach Norman Fegidero Jr believes that the referee’s favouritism toward the Malaysian team contributed to his side’s defeat in their opening match of the 2024 Merdeka Tournament last night.
Fegidero’s remarks followed a strong start by the Philippines, which ultimately succumbed to a 2-1 loss to Harimau Malaya at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, a match notably played without fan group Ultras Malaya present.
The Philippines, known as the Azkals, took an early lead in the 28th minute when a low drive from Jefferson Tabinas deflected off Feroz Baharudin into the Malaysian net for an own goal.
Malaysia equalised in the 43rd minute through Syamer Kutty Abba, while Safawi Rasid secured the winning goal with a penalty in the 73rd minute.
The match was officiated by Yudi Nurchaya from Indonesia.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Fegidero expressed frustration with the officiating, suggesting that controversial referee decisions cost his team the win, despite their lack of preparation due to travel delays.
The Philippines, ranked 147th in the world, fielded a squad featuring eight Europe-based players, many of whom arrived just hours before kickoff due to flight delays.
“I felt it was a one-sided match with the referee favouring the home team. We were denied several times, including two clear penalties – one in each half,” Fegidero said.
“We planned to score early and we had very good chances in the opening minutes. We trained well yesterday and we knew our roles and responsibilities.
“If we had more time and preparation, and if certain decisions had gone our way, we would have definitely won this match.
Looking ahead, Fegidero said the team would regroup for the third-place match against Tajikistan on Sunday and continue preparing for the upcoming AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup.
The Philippines will face Tajikistan, while Malaysia takes on Lebanon in the final of the 43rd Merdeka tournament. – September 5, 2024
