Speaker slams the brakes on royal addendum debate in Parliament

Tan Sri Johari Abdul orders end to discussions, warns of consequences for offensive language

KUALA LUMPUR – Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has put a stop to any further discussion on the royal addendum related to Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s house arrest, as the matter is still pending in court.

The decision followed a heated exchange when Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin accused those allegedly hiding the royal addendum of being “penderhaka” (traitors).

Johari also made it clear that the term “derhaka” (treason) cannot be used in reference to the royal addendum during parliamentary debates.

“Since this matter falls under Standing Order 36(2) and is currently before the courts, and since the word derhaka also violates Standing Order 36(7), I will no longer allow anyone to raise this issue. If anyone does, I will take action,” Johari said, as quoted by the NST.

Standing Order 36(2) of the Dewan Rakyat states that members are not allowed to refer to any matter that is sub judice—meaning it’s still in court—if it could affect the case.

Standing Order 36(7) also bans the use of offensive or insulting language about any member of the house or public institution. – February 4, 2025
