KUALA LUMPUR – The driver of a sand-laden lorry that rammed into a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) truck – killing nine personnel – has been detained by police. He tested negative for drugs.
The crash, which occurred at 8.50am on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam in Teluk Intan, also left two FRU members seriously injured. The FRU convoy was reportedly returning to Ipoh after completing duties for Wesak Day celebrations in Teluk Intan.
According to Hilir Perak district police chief Bakri Zainal Abidin, the detained lorry driver, in his 40s, escaped unhurt and is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“The driver tested negative for drugs. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident and to gather more information,” he said at Teluk Intan Hospital’s Forensic Department, according to reports.
Initial findings suggest the lorry may have experienced steering failure, though police have not ruled out other causes. Bakri also clarified that the death toll stands at nine, not ten as claimed on social media.
According to witnesses interviewed by Bernama, chaos unfolded immediately after the collision.
“FRU personnel jumped out of their vehicles, shouting and calling for help,” said Airul Amri Abd Hamid, a food stall vendor who rushed to the scene after hearing a deafening bang.
“Some were in shock, trying to rescue their colleagues and giving emergency first aid.”
Another witness, Noor Ain Asyiqin Abdul Khalel, said the lorry appeared to swerve to avoid a white van that had emerged from a junction, before slamming into the FRU truck.
“It overturned on impact,” she said.
“I’ve been selling food here for six months and there have been three accidents, but this was the worst because there were fatalities.”
Eight FRU personnel died at the scene, while the ninth succumbed to injuries at Teluk Intan Hospital. The victims – all aged around their 40s – included seven Muslims and two non-Muslims.
Post-mortems are scheduled, and funeral arrangements have begun. Muslim funeral prayers will be held at the Hilir Perak District Police Headquarters surau before the bodies are taken to the Sg Senam Police Station in Ipoh for final rites.
The crash has also sparked a wave of grief and tributes from national leaders.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for a thorough investigation and urged that support be provided to the victims’ families.
“I also pray for the speedy recovery of those injured in this incident,” he said in a Facebook post.
Home Ministry Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah confirmed that the police would lead a full investigation into the crash and provide welfare support to the next of kin.
“I am confident that beyond just the investigation, the police will also take the necessary steps to assist with welfare matters,” he said.
Meanwhile, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil described the loss as a national tragedy.
“FRU personnel are national heroes who are always prepared to be on the front lines to ensure public order and security,” he wrote on Facebook. He also reminded the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and pledged the ministry’s support in ensuring accurate updates.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, in a statement, expressed condolences on behalf of the Royal Malaysia Police.
“Their service and sacrifice are deeply appreciated, especially as the accident occurred after they had completed their assigned duties. PDRM will ensure that the welfare of the families of the victims is given the utmost attention,” he said.
As investigations continue, police have urged anyone with information about the crash to come forward. – May 15, 2025
