MAF must stay ready as global conflicts expose limits of international law: King

Sultan Ibrahim urges military vigilance, clean procurement, and caution on social media amid rising geopolitical tensions

KUALA LUMPUR — The increasingly volatile and uncertain global political climate demands that the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) remain ever ready and equipped with the latest defence technologies to confront any eventuality.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim said the ongoing war between Iran and Israel, as well as the protracted conflict in Gaza, are clear indicators that international laws alone are no longer sufficient to uphold global peace.

“It is crucial for the MAF to always remain prepared and armed with modern technology, as we no longer know who is friend and who is foe,” the king said.

The king was speaking at the commissioning parade and presentation of appointment letters to MAF cadet officers at Kem Perdana, Sungai Besi, earlier today.

At the same time, Sultan Ibrahim urged the government to ensure that all defence procurement processes remain free from political interference and supplier influence.

“The top leadership of the MAF must also act with integrity and avoid corrupt practices. As the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, I will not tolerate anyone who abuses their position for personal gain,” he said.

The king also raised concerns over the culture of social media use among military personnel, reminding them not to share sensitive information online, particularly details concerning troop movements, unit locations, and operational matters.

He cited the Iran-Israel conflict as an example of how both sides have successfully exploited data obtained via technology firms, smart applications, and social media platforms to carry out attacks.

“I want this to stop immediately. Use sound judgment and refrain from revealing unnecessary information to the public. It is better to exercise caution now than to regret later,” the king stressed.

Sultan Ibrahim also congratulated the 509 cadet officers who completed their training today, reminding them that a military career requires immense sacrifice, strength of character, honesty, and unwavering loyalty to the king and country.

He urged them to become leaders who uphold discipline, train their personnel effectively, and prioritise their welfare, while also expressing appreciation to the parents who entrusted their children to serve the nation.

Also present at the ceremony were Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Khaled Nordin, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, Army Chief Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Navy Chief Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain, and Air Force Chief Gen Datuk Muhamad Norazlan Aris. — June 28, 2025
