KUALA LUMPUR — The Umno Supreme Council (MKT) may decide as early as Monday to revoke the six-year suspension imposed on former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, sources told Scoop.
According to a party insider, the council could make various decisions based on individual appeals — including Hishammuddin’s — if it believes doing so would strengthen the party.
“If the council sees it as something that benefits Umno, it’s not impossible for them to forgive and reinstate members, as has happened in other past cases,” the source said.
“There are precedents. If MKT believes it will help reinforce the party, it can happen.”
This follows remarks from Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, who confirmed that Hishammuddin’s suspension is expected to be discussed at Monday’s meeting — but only if Johor Umno chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi raises the matter.
Another source told Scoop that both Hishammuddin and the council should keep an open mind in order to find common ground and unify the party moving forward.
“The party constitution clearly provides for suspended or expelled members to appeal their case. But only the individual concerned can submit the appeal — not a third party,” the source said.
“I understand that Hishammuddin has refused to appeal because he claims he was never informed of the reason for his suspension. But if he wants to be reinstated, an appeal is necessary.
“It’s unlikely that the disciplinary committee would impose such a suspension without cause. I hope both sides can approach this with open hearts.
“This is a time for reconciliation and unity. If God can forgive human sins, surely we can forgive one another for the sake of the party.”
Previously, the Sembrong Umno division proposed that Hishammuddin’s suspension be lifted in order to strengthen the party ahead of the next general election.
Hishammuddin, who is also MP for Sembrong, was suspended from Umno for six years — or two party election cycles — beginning January 27, 2023.
However, he reiterated last December that he had no intention of appealing the suspension. – June 30, 2025.
