Syed Alwi appointed new HRD Corp chief executive

He brings over 27 years of leadership in banking, fintech and corporate strategy, with past roles at Agrobank, BNP Paribas, UMPSA Holdings, MRANTI

KUALA LUMPUR – The Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) has named Syed Alwi Mohamed Sultan as its new chief executive officer, effective today. 

“We warmly welcome and extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Syed Alwi on his appointment. 

“His dynamic leadership and vast corporate experience will support the continuity of our mission to strengthen the country’s human capital development,” the agency said in a statement.

Syed Alwi brings over 27 years of experience in strategic leadership across the financial services, banking technology and management consulting sectors. 

Before this, Syed Alwi helmed UMPSA Holdings Sdn Bhd – a subsidiary of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah – as group CEO for nearly three years. He has also served as president and CEO of Agrobank Malaysia and managing director of BNP Paribas Malaysia Bhd’s Islamic banking division. 

He previously held senior positions at Standard Chartered Saadiq, The Islamic Bank of Asia in Singapore, HL Bank Singapore, and MRANTI Corporation, contributing to operational excellence and long-term stakeholder impact. 

Syed Alwi holds a PhD in Finance from Universiti Malaya and earned both his Bachelor’s in Accountancy and first-class MBA in Islamic Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia. He also completed the Oxford Fintech Programme at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. 

His appointment is expected to reinforce HRD Corp’s strategic direction in advancing national human capital development and supporting the organisation’s digital and innovation agenda. 

HRD Corp, an agency under the Human Resources Ministry, is responsible for managing the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF), which collects levies from key industries to finance workforce training. – July 21, 2025
