KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Airlines recorded the highest on-time performance (OTP) for domestic flights up to May this year, achieving a punctuality rate of 85.3%, according to data from the Transport Ministry (MOT).
Low-cost carrier AirAsia followed closely at 84.5%, while Batik Air trailed with 73.5%.
By the end of 2024, Malaysia Airlines maintained an annual OTP of 84.7%, while AirAsia recorded 67.9% and Batik Air 73.9%.
The Ministry said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) continuously monitors flight punctuality across all local carriers.
“Since 2024, the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) has published OTP data for local airlines, and this responsibility has since been assumed by CAAM, in line with the government’s transparency policy,” MOT said in a written reply posted on the Parliament’s website.
Airlines are required to activate their delay management teams in the event of flight disruptions. For major delays, a media statement must be issued within 24 hours, and a detailed report submitted to CAAM.
The Ministry was responding to a question from Kuala Krai MP Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN), who had raised concerns over the rising frequency of flight delays, particularly for domestic travel. He also sought clarification on passenger rights and compensation.
MOT added that CAAM reviews all complaints lodged against airlines and will take appropriate action in accordance with the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016 (MACPC).
The MACPC, which was updated and gazetted on September 2 2024, aims to further strengthen passenger rights and protection.
Among the key improvements is a new requirement for airlines to offer refunds in the original form of payment for flight delays exceeding five hours, including those caused by extraordinary circumstances. — August 8, 2025
