Jahaberdeen slams ‘syok sendiri’ junior system, demands national badminton overhaul

BAM deputy president says Malaysia lacks a unified blueprint for young talent, calls for urgent reform

KUALA LUMPUR – Lawyer and top badminton official Datuk Seri Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos has delivered a frank assessment of Malaysian badminton, exposing weaknesses in the national junior system and offering rare insight into player contracts during an appearance on Scoop’s Sport Check podcast.

Speaking as BAM deputy president II and Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association (KLBA) president, Jahaberdeen said Malaysia lacks a cohesive blueprint for nurturing young talent.

He contrasted this with KLBA’s successful Jejak Juara programme, which works with all 294 schools in the capital to strengthen grassroots development.

Jahaberdeen was especially critical of the national junior circuit, branding it a “syok sendiri” (self-congratulatory) system. He argued that its current format — dividing states into small groups — limits competition, prevents accurate talent benchmarking, and fails to produce a true national ranking.

On the long-debated issue of player contracts, Jahaberdeen stressed that BAM’s strict agreements are not punitive but essential to protecting the “ecosystem” and ensuring a return on substantial investments in coaching, facilities, and international exposure for its players from a young age.

He explained that while national players are bound by these clauses, professionals face different risks and must negotiate their own terms. He called for “win-win” solutions that safeguard both player welfare and the national body’s interests.

The full conversation, including more candid insights from Jahaberdeen, is available on Scoop’s social media platforms and Podaboom’s YouTube channel. – August 11, 2025
