KUALA LUMPUR – PAS today lodged a police report demanding a thorough investigation into claims that controversial businessman Albert Tei paid bribes to Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
The report was lodged by the Islamist party’s information chief, Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, at the Tawau police station this morning, reported Free Malaysia Today.
“Although he has resigned as the prime minister’s political secretary, that does not absolve him of responsibility to be investigated and to ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly,” the portal quoted Fadhli telling a press conference after lodging the report.
According to PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, just because Shamsul has resigned as the political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, that does not absolve him of responsibility to be investigated.
Fadhli added that PAS will coordinate the lodging of similar police reports nationwide. Several have already been filed in Terengganu and Negeri Sembilan, he said.
PAS Youth information chief Khairul Nadzir Helmi Azhar, who was also present, described the allegations against Shamsul, who is also Melaka PKR chief, as a major blow to the government’s anti-corruption efforts.
“When a senior political aide is implicated, it reflects back on the prime minister. This undermines anti-corruption and reform initiatives and smears the prime minister’s image,” he said.
Under probe
Shamsul yesterday filed a police report against Tei, accusing him of defamation and conspiring to tarnish Anwar’s reputation.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that both Tei and Shamsul would be summoned shortly to provide statements regarding the corruption claims.
Prior to that, Anwar accepted Shamsul’s resignation and stressed that MACC would be free to carry out its investigation without any external interference.
Recently, former Economic Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli called for the Prime Minister to take action, including potentially requesting an investigation by MACC, following a letter of support allegedly issued by one of his political secretaries.
This was followed by a report from the Malaysiakini portal, where Tei claimed he had spent RM629,000 on Shamsul, including for property renovation work linked to the PKR leader, as well as for premium cigars and a bespoke suit.
In June, Tei was charged with two counts of bribing Sabah state assembly members in connection with a mineral licensing scandal in the state. – November 27, 2025
