Authorities suggest domestic dispute may be behind the attack, with one suspect in custody as investigations continue

KUALA LUMPUR — Police have not ruled out the possibility that the attack on sports journalist Haresh Deol in Bangsar on Wednesday may have been a case of mistaken identity.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Seri Fadil Marsus stated that investigations revealed the incident could have stemmed from allegations of harassment involving the suspect’s wife. However, he suggested it might also have been a personal matter, with the assailant possibly targeting the wrong person in an attempt to confront someone he believed was harassing his wife.

“The motive seems to be linked to allegations of harassment towards his wife, which makes it appear to be a personal matter,” Fadil said. “But it also looks like it could be a case of mistaken identity, as he intended to attack the person who allegedly harassed his wife, but attacked the wrong individual.”

Fadil confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and the case will be referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) once the probe is complete.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the assault. He is currently in police custody for further questioning.

“We have one person in custody at the moment, and investigations are continuing,” said Fadil. “We will submit the results to the AGC and seek charges.”

Earlier, Brickfields Police District Chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook confirmed that Haresh filed a police report about the incident around 4 p.m. on Thursday at the Bangsar Police Booth. Haresh had alleged through a post on X that he was attacked by two men while a third recorded the incident on a mobile phone.

The assault occurred on Jalan Maarof, near a shopping centre parking lot, as Haresh was walking along the sidewalk towards Jalan Telawi.

The suspect is currently being held on remand under Section 323 and Section 506 of the Penal Code, which cover offences related to causing harm and criminal intimidation. – November 27, 2025
