KUALA LUMPUR – MIC’s status in Barisan Nasional (BN) will be discussed in the coalition’s Supreme Council meeting next month, said its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid, who is also Umno president, stressed that talks on MIC’s potential departure from BN are unlikely to result in a motion at the Umno General Assembly, which is also set to take place in January next year.
“It has nothing to do with the General Assembly, because Umno’s status with MIC is the same within the Barisan Nasional. We will have a BN Supreme Council meeting in January, next year, and we will decide then,” Bernama quoted the Deputy Prime Minister telling reporters here today.
Previously, MIC’s 79th annual convention deferred the decision on whether to stay in BN to party president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran and the Central Working Committee (CWC).
Vigneswaran later said the party is prepared to work with any bloc that respects its principles and ideology, including Pakatan Harapan.
Zahid had previously cautioned MIC that the party could be stranded in a political ahead if it quits BN, as the country’s political landscape shifts ahead of the next general election.– December 20, 2025
