KUALA LUMPUR – Any decisions made by Umno Youth through the Special Convention regarding the party’s position within the Unity Government must be discussed and formally decided through Umno’s Supreme Council (MKT) and the Umno General Assembly.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan stressed that significant decisions concerning the party’s direction cannot be made independently by any party wing, Sinar Harian reported.
“All decisions must be discussed at the two main Umno platforms, which are the MKT meeting and the Umno General Assembly,” he said.
He added that both of these key party events are scheduled for January, with the Umno General Assembly set to take place from January 14 to 17.
Ahmad made these remarks during a press conference following the Cakna Ilmu Tanah programme in Kampung Parit Dato Onn in Pontian on Saturday.
The Pontian MP emphasized that any proposals, including those raised by Umno Youth, must be brought forward and discussed officially at the MKT meeting before being decided at the Umno General Assembly.
“I have previously served as the Umno Information Chief and Secretary-General. I fully understand that the party’s direction—whether to remain as we are or make changes—can only be determined by the MKT and the Umno General Assembly,” he said.
On December 28, Umno Youth announced plans to host a Special Convention on January 3, 2026, to discuss and make decisions regarding the party’s future, particularly its position within the Unity Government.
Umno Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said the convention would take place at Dewan Tun Dr Ismail, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL).
Meanwhile, Ahmad, who also serves as the Deputy Minister of Public Works, pointed out that a major source of tension among party members involves the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
“The sensitive issue for Umno members is DAP. If DAP leaders and lawmakers do not provoke Umno members, then relations within the Unity Government will be more harmonious,” he said.
He urged DAP leaders at all levels to be cautious in their statements and be mindful of the sensitivities of grassroots Umno members.
“Umno has 191 divisions, over 22,000 branch leaders, and more than three million members. Before making any statement, DAP leaders must think carefully not to offend Umno members,” he said.
Previously, Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin posted a comment on social media that appeared to refer to the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s ruling rejecting Najib’s judicial review application on a royal decree, which would have allowed him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
Bee Yin’s post read: “Another reason to celebrate this year-end.”
The post came hours after High Court Judge Alice Loke Yee Ching ruled that the royal decree had not been discussed or decided at the 61st Pardons Board meeting, which convened on January 29, 2024. – January 3, 2025
