KUALA LUMPUR – A daring escape from Sungai Buloh Prison has raised serious concerns about security protocols, after a remand detainee reportedly vanished while under police custody at the high-security complex.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng described the incident as “deeply alarming,” noting that it occurred during the transfer of the detainee from a police vehicle into the prison grounds.
“The circumstances point to a serious breakdown in security control, given that the individual was already fully under the custody of law enforcement officers at the time,” Lim said.
He highlighted the gravity of the situation, adding: “More worryingly, this individual is facing serious criminal charges. How can a high-risk detainee simply slip away so easily?”
Lim questioned whether the escape was aided internally or externally, asking: “Was he handcuffed? How did he disappear within a high-security facility? Did he walk out unnoticed, climb a wall, or was he hidden and smuggled out like something out of a Hollywood film?”
The politician also called for the release of any CCTV footage to restore public trust. “If there is CCTV footage, show it to the public. If there is none, then this is a fundamental failure that cannot be accepted in a facility of this level,” he said.
Stressing the need for accountability, Lim added: “People don’t want excuses. We want the truth and the evidence. This is not just a procedural lapse – this is about public safety and credibility.”
Police have confirmed that the escaped detainee is 24-year-old Pakistani national Muhammad Hassan, who was last seen wearing an orange T-shirt and black trousers. He had been remanded to assist investigations into multiple sexual offences against children, as well as charges under Section 377C and Section 392 of the Penal Code, Section 14(d) and (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Superintendent Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor, Sungai Buloh district police chief, advised the public to exercise caution due to Muhammad’s history of sexual offences against children. Those with information on his whereabouts are urged to contact investigating officer Inspector C. Muhendran at 010-4304383, the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters at 03-61561222, or any nearby police station.
He also reminded the public not to spread unverified information or speculation, warning that such actions could disrupt law enforcement operations and cause public alarm.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Prisons Department confirmed it is working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to locate and re-arrest the detainee. A statement from the department said the search operation has been intensified with involvement from multiple security agencies.
“The Prisons Department is committed to ensuring the safety of detainees and the public and will take strict action against any breaches of procedure,” the statement read. – April 11, 2026
