KUALA LUMPUR – Nineteen Members of Parliament, including Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, have pledged their support for the appointment of PAS Vice-President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as the new chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN).

In a joint statement, the MPs congratulated the Terengganu Menteri Besar on his new role, describing it as a significant step towards consolidating the opposition coalition and strengthening its position as the key opposition bloc, ready to serve the people and contribute to the nation’s development.

“As Members of Parliament, we will continue to support Perikatan Nasional, led by PAS as its main party,” the statement read.

Among the MPs expressing their support were Beluran MP Datuk Seri Ronal Kiandee, Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, Indera Mahkota MP Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah, and Tanah Merah MP Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz.

Other signatories included Datuk Rosol Wahid (Hulu Terengganu), Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Tasek Gelugor), Datuk Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (Kubang Pasu), Datuk Muslimin Yahaya (Sungai Besar), Datuk Abdul Khalid Abdullah (Rompin), Khlir Mohd Nor (Ketereh), and Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang).

The statement was also supported by Zakri Hassan (Kangar), Roslan Hashim (Kulim Bandar Baharu), Fathul Huzir Ayob (Gerik), Azahari Hassan (Padang Rengas), Nordin Ahmad Ismail (Lumut), Kalam Salam (Sabak Bernam), and Islahuddin Abbas (Mersing).

Earlier, the PN Supreme Council unanimously approved Ahmad Samsuri’s appointment as chairman, following the resignation of former Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on January 1. Muhyiddin, who now serves as the deputy chairman of PN, was replaced by Ahmad Samsuri in a move that aims to reinvigorate the opposition bloc.

Hamzah and three other MPs were expelled from Bersatu on February 13 after a leadership dispute with Muhyiddin. It is reported that they and their supporters are planning to join another political party in the coming week.

Following Ahmad Samsuri’s appointment, leaders of Perikatan’s component parties have also agreed in principle to allow PAS to take over the opposition leader’s role, currently held by Hamzah.

However, PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan said that a final decision on this matter will be made at a later time as the party continues to deliberate. – February 22, 2026
