KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has expressed concern over recent tensions and public disputes involving several Hindu organisations and individuals within the community, particularly those who are Muslims.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan stressed in a statement shared on his Facebook page that issues involving religion and ethnicity must be handled appropriately.
“PAS stresses that matters related to religion and ethnic identity must be addressed with wisdom, calmness and deep sensitivity to the fundamental nature of our society, which is diverse and multicultural,” he said.
Takiyuddin added that such matters should be handled without provocation or extreme behaviour from any party.
“Attempts to frame these issues in ways that foster suspicion, hatred and hostility between communities or groups are highly irresponsible and must be rejected by all parties,” he further stressed in the statement.
He also urged ministers and leaders from other political parties to act responsibly and maturely when commenting on the issue.
At the same time, authorities managing the tensions and disputes must act swiftly, transparently and fairly, Takiyuddin said, adding that this is crucial in maintaining public trust.
“At times like these, Malaysia greatly needs voices that calm the situation rather than inflame tensions,” he added.
