Private sector firms should grant Hari Raya leave, flexible work arrangement: HR ministry

Kesuma urges flexibility to support staff well-being during festive season

KUALA LUMPUR – The Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma) has urged private sector employers to provide additional leave or flexible arrangements for employees following the government’s announcement of a special public holiday for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The call comes after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the nationwide holiday to ease festive travel.

Under Section 60D of the Employment Act 1955, Kesuma clarified that the holiday extends to private sector workers. Employers may observe the holiday on the announced date or designate another working day in its place.

“Employees required to work on the designated date are entitled to the mandatory public holiday pay rates prescribed by law,” the ministry emphasised.

Kesuma encouraged employers to adopt a compassionate approach, noting that supporting staff well-being and work-life balance could strengthen industrial relations and enhance productivity in the long term.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad added during a press conference that hospital appointments falling on the extra holiday will be rescheduled, though emergency services will continue without interruption.

The ministry also advised employers and staff to discuss arrangements in advance to ensure smooth operations while allowing employees to celebrate with their families. – March 15, 2026
