KUALA LUMPUR — Renewed conflict between US-Israeli forces and Iran is likely after US President Donald Trump called Iran’s response to a US peace proposal “totally unacceptable” yesterday.
“I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it – TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
He did not provide details on Iran’s counterproposal to the US’ terms, which reportedly focused on extending the truce in the Gulf to allow for talks on a final settlement of the conflict, and on Iran’s contested nuclear programme, AFP reports.
Also yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he and Trump “were on the same page” regarding Iran’s uranium stockpile, adding that the war could not end until this was removed and nuclear facilities dismantled.
“It’s not over, because there’s still nuclear material – enriched uranium – that has to be taken out of Iran. There’s still enrichment sites that have to be dismantled,” Netanyahu said in CBS’s “60 Minutes” broadcast.
Iran meanwhile has been demanding an end to the war “on all fronts, especially Lebanon” as well as on “ensuring shipping security” in the Strait of Hormuz, according to information by Pakistani truce intermediaries.
Iran also sought guarantees that its transferred uranium will be returned if negotiations fail or Washington quits the agreement later.
Brent crude prices on Sunday rose 3.17% to $104.50 a barrel as the peace talks appear to have stalled again.
Iran is demanding payment for tolls from ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz, while the US Navy is blockading Iran’s ports and either disabling or diverting ships headed to and from them.
There were also fresh drone attacks in the Gulf yesterday, with the United Arab Emirates saying it intercepted two launched from Iran, and Kuwait reporting “a number of” drone attacks in its airspace. – May 11, 2026
